A couple of ago, my buddy and I were on the way home from work. While waiting for the light to change, we noticed that the driver of a dump truck had climbed out of his rig and was trying to wake someone up. A panhandler had passed out while sitting on the ground by the light. The man was slumped over in the most unnatural way imaginable. I caught the attention of the driver as he was climbing back into his truck, but I couldn’t hear what he was saying. It seemed he had given up on waking the man up and was now proceeding to drive away.

We pulled off the road, of course. My buddy and I made our way back to the sleeping, shirtless man. Not only was he passed the f**k out, but this guy could not have chosen a more terrible spot to plant himself. Not more than a few inches away from his leg was an incredibly large Red Ant Colony!

I wish you could have seen the look on his face when I woke him up and pointed to the thousands of big red ants. Miraculously for sleepy dude, I didn’t see even one ant clambering on him. He definitely got away with one that day.

The man was obviously struggling with the near 100° temperatures, and we didn’t hesitate to help him out. Fortunately for sleepy guy, my buddy and I had a short work day, and we both still had our lunches. Funny how things play out sometimes, huh.

We hooked him up with sandwiches, bottles of water, cans of soda, and half a pack of cigarettes. It’s essential, of course, being able to recognize the sign of the moment and participate in universal activities. 

  1. I’m glad y’all stopped to help the guy.
Ugh – red ants! They are really getting busy around here right now getting ready for fall, I guess. I see them in our back yard and porch going after the cat food. Really need to find where there main place is.
